Outside Magazine's Adventure Guide to Northern California (1996 Ed)
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (July, 1996)
Author: Andrew Rice
Average review score:

This book rocks!
I have been living in the Bay area for almost 3 years and have had numerous books, most of which stink in comparison to this one. The vast amount of area that this book covers is great for doing just about anything in or around the Bay Area. I've probably utilized this book for more than 30 different activities (biking, hiking, camping, etc.) and I'd have to say that just about EVERYTHING that I've done was great and went smoothly because of the detail the book provides. The only bad thing I'd have to say is that the layout of the information is a bit confusing, but there are so many good "activities" in it that you get over that part quickly.

The Bible of Northern California Guides
If you like the outdoors and spend time in Northern California like I do, this book is indespensible! I use it to find all kinds of cool things to do when I travel. I used it on my last trip and it guided me on fun things to do in and around San Francisco, up through Napa and Sonoma valley, great hikes in less populated regions further North around Mt. Shasta, down to Yosemite, the greatest park in the world, to Sea Kayaking in Monterey Bay and finally down to fun coastal stuff around Big Sur. Needless to say I'm very psyched that author Andrew Rice is researching a book on outdoor adventures in Southern California!

Outsider, Insider
Published in Hardcover by Marian-Darien Press (15 September, 1998)
Authors: Andrew Heiskell and Ralph Graves
Average review score:

Wonderful story of a wonderful man
I had the good fortune to spend a bit of time with Mr. Heiskell, and, certainly, he is a generous, accomplished, and fascinating man. In so many respects, he represents the best of his era and his city, and this book tells the story with elegance and grace.

Honest, Inspiring and Supremely Entertaining
I worked at Time Inc. from 1979 to 1996, and witnessed the end of the management era over which Mr. Heiskell reigned. The book accurately captures the politics of the profound changes that took place in the few years prior to, and during, my tenure. The most fascinating accounts of Time Inc. are of the earlier days, of which we have broad access to the creative thinking that was at work shaping the editorial products, and building the business into the empire that finally succumbed to the worst temptations of capitalism.

Over Here, over There: The Andrews Sisters and the Uso Stars in World War II
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (June, 1994)
Authors: Maxene Andrews and Bill Gilbert
Average review score:

Stars that helped out by entertaining the troops...
Great book about the Andrews Sisters, their work during the WWII years with the USO, and many of the other stars that participated in these shows to entertain the troops.

Back in MY day ...
This book provides fabulous insight on WWII and the spirit of America that helped win the war for the Allies. So many times, my parents said, "Why, back in my day we didn't get meat at every dinner. But we didn't complain: we LIKED it!" If you want to know more about America's patriotic spirit and how it "gets the job done", you'll love this book. The Andrews Sisters were a class act and Maxine and the other USO "soldiers in greasepaint" did their best to encourage and cheer our fighting forces on home soil and abroad. This book has a lot of history and tells about emotions of the folks during that time in a very poignant way. If you ever wondered why certain songs with wacky titles were popular ("Six Jerks In A Jeep"), you'll come away with greater understanding.

The Oxford Companion to African American Literature
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (April, 1997)
Authors: William L. Andrews, Frances Smith Foster, Trudier Harris, and Henry Louis, Jr. Gates
Average review score:

OUTSTANDING RESOURCE
Everything that you wanted to know or needed to know about African American Literature is contained in this eight hundred page volume. This comprehensive volume covers the historical and cultural contexts of African American literature that has been too long neglected.

Oxford's Companion encompasses the traditional genres of poetry, fiction and drama but goes beyond them. It gives the same analysis to special genres such as Slave Narratives, Oratory, Folk Literature, etc. that you don't normally find in reference works of this kind. These special features and others give this book a unique spot in reference works of literature.

From the moment I got this volume in my hands, I couldn't put it down. Its numerous essays, brief biographies and analysis of the various hues of African American Literature was overwhelming and enjoyable. A referance guide such as this should be in every home. It is user friendly, informative and entertaining. Most of all it will give you a deeper appreciation of the vast types of African American literature produced throughout the years.

An English Graduate Student in Nashville
I purchased this anthology to assist me in my African-American literature class. This book has given me great insight about the literature of African-Americans. Not only does it give great details about the many authors, but it also explains the nature of their many works. I strongly recommend this book to anyone taking an African-American literature course - regardless of the time period.

The Palmist's Companion: A History and Bibliography of Palmistry
Published in Hardcover by Scarecrow Press (July, 1992)
Author: Andrew Fitzherbert
Average review score:

Scholarly Review by the World's Foremost Authority
This work is a detailed review of the major developments in the history of handreading from the foremost expert in this particular field. The book contains reviews of hundreds of books on handreading together with a collection of short historical essays on Indian, Chinese, Arabic, Victorian and other traditions of palmistry. The essays on many of the colourful characters that have walked the handreading stage over the centuries, such as Cheiro, Heron-Allen and Katherine St Hill are excellent. He is absolutely right about the fraudulency of the so-called 'modern chinese' traditions of handreading which have nothing to do with the Chirological Society of St Hill, for example. Contains many rare photographs and some priceless comments on some very rare and obscure books and manuscripts on handreading. A very thorough piece of work that is an essential part of any serious handreader's collection. You won't learn how to read hands with this book, but you will learn a great deal about handreading.

Hard work by author rewards the reader. Not a how to book.
Fitzherbert has done all serious palmists and students of the history of palmistry a real service with this work. While Christopher Jones may not agree with his treatment of the history of the Chierology Society or his assessment of the value of Terrance Dukes' Wu Hsing methods, this is a very useful work in its history, and reviews of the palmistry literature, especially in the last century or two. I used it extensively as a resource for my own history in the Encyclopedia of Palmistry. Might no suggest some rewrites ib both books on the history of scientific hand analysis with some credits or more credits for the works of Evangelista Purkinje, Sir Francis Galton, Harris Hawthorne Wilder, Ines Whipple and Kristine Bonnevie prior to the work of Harold Cummins and Charles Midlo. This is not a how to read palms book. Ed Campbell

Phantom of the Opera: Easy Piano (Order No. Hl00366003)
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (February, 1989)
Authors: Andrew Lloyd Webber and Andrew Lloyd Webber
Average review score:

Hauntingly beautiful
I love POTO! I had been trying to get this music book for ages. It's quite simple, and very suitable for Grade 3 and above. My fav is the theme song of course and 'All I Ask of You' and 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' are beyond anything I've ever played. 'Masquerade' is not exactly my fav and 'The Point of No Return' is quite tricky but all are equally hauntingly beautiful!

This is Great
I really Liked this book because you get to play the main songs from The Phantom. It really Isn't that easy, but the harder it is the better it sounds! I reccomend this book to all who love the Phantom songs and would like to play them for themselves

Highly intellectual evaluation of modern global ideology
Intriguingly insightful, Matthews and Ingersoll explore fundamental maxims of the basic ideologies of global politicial and philosophical politics. A must read for anyone interested in the ubiquitous pursuit of unravelling the many perspectives of motivation of world leaders and thinkers.

Great
Highly recommended. If you are interested in exploring different ideologies around the world, you will find this book very helpful.

Pin
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (March, 1981)
Author: Andrew Neiderman
Average review score:

Pin is my longtime friend & lifetime companion!
Pin is the best book ever. I love Pin. Pin is such a character. I wish Pin was real so I could enjoy his company at all hours of the day & night. I would like to see Pin dance and maybe sing too. I bet he'd be real good. Pin can show you how a body works but also he can show you how a MIND might work.I feel sorry for anyone who has'nt experienced Pin's Majesty.

Excellent!, Gripping! A real page turner!
I am thrilled that Amazon was able to locate a copy of this novel for me within their network! I saw the movie on video years ago and thought it was quite good, but the movie couldn't even begin to compare with the novel! I would recommend this book to anyone. Every page makes you want to read on and on. I was actually dissappointed when I finished, which I have to admit, I just received the book yesterday and finished it last night. I'm sure I'll wait a couple of months and read it again.

This book was a real psychological thriller with surprises around every corner. A brother and sister like none I've ever read about before! Neiderman takes his readers into the deepest, darkest depths of the human mind where true inner madness hides behind secret passions.

Very suspensful! I highly suggest this book gets republished and put back on the shelves for the readers of today to experience Neiderman at his best!

Pirate Radio: The Incredible Saga of America's Underground, Illegal Broadcasters
Published in Paperback by Universal Radio Research (October, 1995)
Authors: Andew Yoder and Andrew Yoder
Average review score:

Fantastic reading!
I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in free speech or broadcasting.

interesting, capitvating history of undergound broadcasting
Personally, I enjoyed this book. At the time I bought it,12/95, I hadn't heard a pirate broadcast so I listened to the enclosed CD which was especially valuable. It helped me understand how difficult the broadcasts can be to hear, even under the optimum conditions. The book has a nice history of the active pirates both in the U.S. and international past and present. It describes nicely what pirates do, why they do it, and a little on how they do it on shortwave and FM micreobroadcasting. It tells about how the FCC and their perpetual search for the transmitting pirate. Overall, I've learned a lot more about shortwave pirates. Thanks Andrew Yoder for and excellent reference. P.S. I finally heard my first pirate! Take it easy radio on 6955 MHz, they even QSL'd me.
